Creating Vintage Glamour Images
Making old-school glamour photographs is not only amusing yet rather challenging, as it demands good knowledge of numerous nuances e.g. posing, lighting and composition, let alone the unique spirit of golden age of glamour images. It is so amusing because it takes keen artistic vision and can make quite a modern girl look just like the greatest models of the past on a dramatic and contrasting shot. For a glamour photographer it should be quite doable to make an old-school picture using some thoughtful lighting, posing and accessories.
Almost 90% of work here is done by arranging lights properly. Studio is the perfect place for shooting such Glamour Photos as various lighting from different angles are required. Shadow beneath the nose is the characteristic of glamour images from the golden age, so you would require a strong, undiffused key light shinning at a high angle, which makes the model appear to be in the spotlight. Moreover, you would need two fill lights to shine on the model. As a must-have finisher, backlight will make the model stand out from the background.
Obviously, colors mean a lot for Beauty Photography, so monochrome should be perfect for creating the old-school impression and well the eyes of retro-fans with tears of delight. Additionally, you need to make contrast you priority; for revealing and emphasizing contours of the face, make sure the fill light never exceed one third of the key light in their intensity.
Due to the fact that in the past models would rarely look right into the camera, you would want your model to direct her eyes to the side and make her wear a subtle and mysterious expression. Old-school glamour photographs are not about natural looks but about dramatic atmosphere. Reduce the amount of glamour in the entourage; I mean it in vintage glamour photography the model is central persona and the carrier of all that glamorous atmosphere, not her wardrobe or surroundings. For black and white mode, try to go for monochromatic attire, as it will increase the contrast. Do not use too many colors as the lighting will take the colors away, and try to get the make up matte, not gloss so as to absorb the hard light.
