Yes this is the time of festival in New Orleans on the Bourbon Street and French quarter known to be Mardi Grass (Fat Tuesday).
Looking at the history of this festival, this was settled by French people celebrating as a part of a ceremonial Catholic practice said to be one of the America's biggest parties of the year. Origin was from the Ethnic Roman Carnival celebrations but now considered to be a part of Christian beliefs. During this time Christians observe fast and give sacrifices, preparing for Easter.
This festival is famous for its beads. Mardi Gras New Orleans Beads are famous all over the world with a history. One of the groups from the secret societies during French rule, Rex, started with the thematic colors and throwing glass beads on the parade. Now these beads are sold as a symbol of New Orleans Beads, women wearing them on their naked breasts for the trade of the beads. Thematic colors were observed in these beads but now are available in every color since imported from China. Some of the Mardi Grasbeads have flashing lights in them and some are transformed into smiley faces, animals etc.
As the day moves towards the sunset, as a tradition a, masked ball is being held at the New Orleans Municipal Auditorium, which continues till the midnight commencing with Ash Wednesday.
