The history of glass – Part 1
The Webster dictionary of English states that the word window is a derivative of the Icelandic ‘vindauga' literally translated as ‘wind eye'. Which isn't surprising as windows didn't include etched glass panes till as far back as the millennia, round about the Renaissance era. They were on some occasions found in the Roman baths or at the houses of the wealthy citizens but became popular in European windows at the end of the Eighth century. But for quite some time glass-paned windows were limited to the richest of the citizens of Florence, Venice and Genoa. Glass was at that time not only expensive, it was also an unmatched symbol of superiority and class. The trend spread fairly slowly and it was around the beginning of the 9th century that all the windows in the urban European areas were paned with etched glass excluding those owned by the lowliest of the public. This marks the industrial mass production of glass.(Butera, 2004).
It can be said that the glass pane is the most significant technological advancement in history after fire when it comes to walled spaces and surely the tougher one to make. It became possible to remain warm while staying inside and enjoy the weather without actually experiencing the undesirable aspects of it – glass combined the best of the outdoors, with the comfort of the indoors. Staying warm in the past was difficult as a fire would keep only the front warm while the peoples' backs would still bear the chilly weather as the cold winds would enter the space through the ‘ wind-eye' windows which were left open to keep the fire going and to avoid the build-up of smoke in the room. These were often hazardous.
Glazed windows lead to another tremendous advancement in indoor heating, the invention of the stove. A room with glass-paned windows and a stove was perfect for the people as natural light could be enjoyed with heat spread evenly around the room as cross ventilation wasn't required to keep the fire burning. Furthermore, the etched glasswould trap heat waves from the sun, leading to better indoor thermal comfort in winters even in the absence of a heating source. Such windows were then used extensively, in public and private houses. This also marks the beginning of a new era for glass use, the era that allowed glass to be used as a necessity, instead of a luxury… Cont.
