What is 925 Silver?
When shopping for silver jewelry, it is important to note that not all silver is created equal. What is commonly called sterling silver is actually an alloy containing 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. Sterling silver, therefore, is also known in the jewelry industry as 925 silver. This percentage of copper or other metals gives silver strength enough to be made into jewelry while retaining the silver’s natural beauty.
Trademarks, or hallmarks, are used on silver to mark the purity of the silver alloy as well as the identification of the silversmith. Sterling silver will be marked as such, or with the number 925 to indicate the high quality of the silver.
Cleaning sterling, or 925, silver requires a special solution made especially for that purpose. Silver should never be exposed to chlorine or other heavy chemicals. The less pure a silver alloy, the more easily it will tarnish. Sterling silver should be stored in soft cloth to protect the alloyed metal from oxidizing in the air.
Rhodium Free Silver
Rhodium is a precious metal related to platinum. It is used on metal jewelry to enhance shine and resist scratches. Most often rhodium is used on white metals, such as platinum, silver and white gold. Silver actually has more shine than rhodium, so rhodium-plated silver jewelry is less shiny.
Rhodium plating on jewelry does not last forever, and needs be replaced by a qualified jeweler every few years. However, rhodium plating tends to wear off of silver jewelry unevenly, making re-plating or repairing difficult or expensive. Because rhodium is a precious metal, rhodium-plating jewelry can drive up the cost of jewelry pieces.
Pieces coated in rhodium are also more difficult to clean. When heated, rhodium beads up and burns off, leaving a scaly finish to the silver. For this reason, rhodium-free sterling silver is often more desirable than rhodium-plated silver jewelry.
