HOT IDEAS FOR COOL WINTER FLOWERS
When the weather cools down, it’s time to warm things up with some stunning fresh flower arrangements. A change of season always brings new and exciting flower varieties into the picture , and the cooler weather brings lovely berries, citrus and a host of other hot options to make bright bunches to cheer up the frosty gloom
For those in the northern hemisphere, this could mean a stunning Christmas arrangement that will be a talking point at the best-dressed festive tables – whilst for those southern hemisphere dwellers, it’s a chance at mid-year Yuletide celebration. But no matter where you are in the world, and no matter what the occasion – this scorching floral idea is bound to get the mercury on the rise!
The starting point is to find a container – preferably rectangular but anything goes really – but it needs to be in proportion to the table that it will be displayed on and not much higher than the champagne glasses . Then get some oasis or floral foam and float it in a bowl of water. Here’s a tip from a leading florist in Perth, don’t try and push the oasis down into the water in an attempt to saturate it more quickly – this will just cause air bubbles to form. It will then sink to the bottom of the bucket when it has fully absorbed all the water . Then place the oasis in the container and wrap chicken wire over the top.
And now to the fun part ....the flowers!. You’ll need a combination of berries (eg hypericum, privet, nandina and holly), deep green glossy foliage (eg laurel), red or orange roses, gerbera daisies and oranges. The aim is to create a festive, warm ambience with oranges, yellows and red colour hues.
This will be a low arrangement so cut the stems fairly short. Put some of the berries at each end of the container (for example the pyracantha) and place the foliage in the gaps. Then put another type of berry in the centre of the arrangement. Push wooden skewers or sharp sticks into the oranges and add them in groups of three, using differing heights to create depth and interest. Lastly, use the flowers to fill in the gaps. Use your own creativity when placing the flowers, but one suggestion from the online florist in Perth is to have the gerberas in the centre and the roses towards the end, also grouped together in threes.
This leading Perth online flowers specialist also suggests prolonging the life of the gerbera daisies by snipping off a centimetre or two off their stems (longer in this case because it’s a low arrangement), and then placing the flowers into a bit of boiling water until you see air bubbles appear out of the stems. The whole process should take around 10 seconds, after which the flowers should be placed into cool water.
You could also collect pods and cones during the year to add to this festive arrangement – even spray painting those with Christmas colours (eg red, gold and silver) to really add your special signature to your creation.
For other fresh flower ideas or to arrange a floral delivery for any special occasion, talk to your local florist in Perth – they’re sure to have a host of new and exciting ideas that will brighten up even the coldest day.
